Archaeological researcher Van Hoek documented this prehistoric artwork in 1987, noting its position on a slope that inclines at 15 degrees towards the east-northeast. The site features at least seven individual cup marks; simple, circular depressions carved into the rock face that represent one of the most common forms of prehistoric art found across Ireland and Britain.

The most intriguing element of this rock art panel sits on the lower section of the stone sheet. Here, a central cup mark appears to be surrounded by four concentric rings, though centuries of weathering have taken their toll on the carving's clarity. What makes this particular example especially interesting is the presence of what Van Hoek described as a possible 'tail'; a carved line that extends from the central cup and runs down the natural slope of the rock. This feature is located approximately two metres northwest of another documented archaeological feature in the area, known by the reference number DG004-063004.

These cup and ring marks likely date to the Neolithic or Bronze Age period, somewhere between 6,000 and 3,000 years ago. While their exact purpose remains a mystery, similar carvings found throughout Ireland and Scotland have been variously interpreted as territorial markers, astronomical calendars, or ritual sites. The Magheranaul examples, compiled into the archaeological record by Caimin O'Brien in 2010, add another piece to the puzzle of Ireland's prehistoric past, offering visitors a tangible connection to the island's earliest inhabitants.
