Rock art, Mongnacool, Co. Wicklow

In the uplands of Mongnacool in County Wicklow, there is a carved stone that may no longer exist, or may simply be waiting to be found again.

When a researcher went looking for it in 1990, following directions laid down more than a century earlier, the stone was not there. Or rather, nothing matching the description could be located. Whether it has been buried, shifted, or was simply too eroded to recognise is not known.

The original account comes from Kinahan, writing in 1884, who catalogued it as stone D in a group of carved rocks in the area. Even at that point, the stone was in poor condition. Kinahan described its surface as very much weathered, with most of the markings too indistinct to read with any confidence. The clearest feature was a cup-mark to the east, and cup-marks are exactly what they sound like: small, roughly circular depressions ground or pecked into the rock surface, a form of prehistoric carving found widely across Ireland and Britain, though their purpose remains unclear. Alongside that single legible cup, Kinahan noted two further cups that were barely visible, and two carvings he described as combinations of cups and gashes, elongated cuts running through or alongside the rounded hollows. There was also something to the northward that might have been a gash, though he acknowledged it could equally be the result of natural weathering rather than human handiwork. The stone, in other words, was already at the edge of legibility in 1884, its prehistoric marks dissolving back into the rock.
