Rock art, Straths, Co. Donegal

On the grassland near Trawbreaga Bay in County Donegal, an elongated rock outcrop breaks through the earth, stretching five metres from north to south and just over a metre across.

This earth-fast stone sits roughly 30 metres from the southern shoreline, where ancient artists left their mark in the form of cup and ring motifs carved into its weathered surface.

The rock art features circular cup marks, each about eight centimetres in diameter, alongside larger ring motifs measuring 22 centimetres across. These prehistoric carvings represent a tradition found throughout Ireland, Scotland, and northern England, typically dating from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Cup and ring marks like these remain one of archaeology's enduring mysteries; whilst their exact purpose is unknown, theories range from territorial markers to astronomical observations, ritual sites, or maps of the surrounding landscape.

The Straths area of Donegal contains several examples of this ancient art form, with the Trawbreaga Bay stone being particularly notable for its coastal location and well-preserved motifs. The site was documented by Caimin O'Brien and photographed by Bauke Roof, ensuring these millennia-old carvings continue to intrigue visitors and researchers alike. The exposed position near the bay means the stone has weathered centuries of Atlantic storms whilst maintaining its carved decorations, a testament to both the durability of the rock and the depth of the original engravings.
