Rosslare Strand Railway Station, Rosslare, Co. Wexford

Five bays of roughcast wall run along a rectangular plan beneath a hipped slate roof, the whole composition organised around a central doorway so plain that it borders on austere. Yet this restraint is deliberate: the building was designed to replace something worse, and its quiet competence marks a specific moment when the Irish railway network was trying to put its best face forward.

That earlier structure had a reputation. A local newspaper, The People, described the station it superseded as "an insanitary and unsightly building" in January 1913, a judgement harsh enough to have prompted its replacement that same year. The original station had been built in connection with the extension of the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway line, opened in 1882 by the Wicklow and Wexford Railway Company, part of the broader push to connect Wexford's coastal villages to the national network. What went up in 1913 was a more considered piece of architecture: rendered chimney stacks finished with cyma recta or cyma reversa cornice capping, a classical moulding profile alternating concave and convex curves, topped with terracotta pots; six-over-six timber sash windows set behind wrought iron bars, their sash boxes still partly visible; a timber boarded front door with an overlight. Cut granite sills anchor the window openings, and cast iron downpipes survive alongside more recent uPVC guttering, a small but telling mix of original fabric and practical replacement.

Much of that fabric remains legible today, both outside and within, and the building's form and massing have kept their early twentieth century character rather than being reworked beyond recognition. Nearby stands a signal box that reads as part of the same design intention, the two structures together forming a self-contained group that still registers as a deliberate architectural statement in the village. That reading has become more pointed in recent years, as Rosslare Strand has seen extensive suburban style development spread around it, leaving the station and its signal box as a comparatively restrained, purpose-built pairing amid newer surroundings.
