Saint Erneen’s Well, Ballyargadaun, Co. Galway

A large flat stone, roughly a metre and a third across, sits over a natural spring on a north-facing slope in County Galway.

At its centre is a hole just wide enough to reach through, and through that hole the water below is accessible. This is the arrangement at Saint Erneen's Well in Ballyargadaun, a holy well whose physical form quietly encodes centuries of ritual logic: the capping stone keeps the source contained and protected, while the opening keeps it reachable, present, and alive.

The well is enclosed by a circular drystone wall, the kind of dry-laid construction built without mortar, relying on the weight and fit of the stones themselves. A gap in the north side of the wall, nearly a metre wide, once served as an entrance, though it is now blocked with wooden fencing. O'Flanagan noted the site in 1927, by which point the well was already understood as a place associated with Saint Erneen, a figure whose name is otherwise little documented in the wider canon of Irish saints. What the site does preserve, clearly and physically, are the traces of a pattern of devotion still legible in the landscape: rags tied to an ash tree to the north-east and to a hawthorn tree to the south. The practice of tying cloth, sometimes called clooties or votive rags, to trees at holy wells is one of the oldest continuous ritual acts in Ireland, the rags left as offerings or petitions, their gradual weathering understood in some traditions as part of the prayer itself. Both ash and hawthorn carry deep associations with otherworldly thresholds in Irish folk belief, and their presence here alongside the well is unlikely to be coincidental.
