Saint Senan’s Church, Molougha, Co. Clare

A church dedicated to Saint Senan sits in the townland of Molougha in County Clare, carrying a name that connects it to one of the most venerated early Christian figures in Munster.

Senan of Scattery Island, who is said to have founded a monastery on Inis Cathaigh in the Shannon estuary around the sixth century, left his mark across a wide arc of the western seaboard, with numerous wells, churches, and parishes bearing his name long after his death. That a small rural townland in Clare should preserve his dedication is not surprising, but it places Molougha within a much older devotional landscape, one that predates the parish structures imposed by later medieval and post-Reformation reorganisation.
