The structure itself dates to around 1900, built from rough, unworked rubble stone in a single storey, single bay, and it stands freestanding rather than attached to any church or dwelling, which suggests it was built specifically as a shelter for the well rather than as a repurposed outbuilding.

Holy wells are among the more persistent features of the Irish landscape, sites where water was, and in many cases still is, associated with healing, ritual, or the memory of a particular saint. Saint Sylvester's Well takes its name from one such figure, and the decision to enclose it in purpose-built stonework at the turn of the twentieth century reflects a wider pattern seen at wells across the country during that period, when local communities or landowners invested in formalising access to a site that had likely been venerated informally for generations before. The circular plan and conical roof are practical as much as symbolic, keeping the water sheltered while marking the well as a distinct, deliberately built place rather than an open spring.

The rubble construction, stones left rough and unshaped rather than dressed or cut, gives the building a plain, almost utilitarian appearance, in keeping with many small-scale devotional structures of its era. There is no elaborate ornamentation to look for here, no carved detail competing for attention; the interest lies instead in the simple fact of the enclosure itself, a small act of architecture wrapped around a much older tradition of water and reverence.
