Settlement cluster, Coolaboy, Co. Limerick

Not every excavation ends with a dramatic find.

At Coolaboy in County Limerick, a cluster of five structures drew enough attention to warrant a formal archaeological investigation, only for the dig to conclude that there was nothing ancient there at all. In the world of Irish field archaeology, where ancient ringforts, souterrains, and medieval settlements are regularly turned up beneath seemingly unremarkable ground, the anticlimactic result is itself worth noting. The site looked, from the outside, like it might yield something. It did not.

The excavation was carried out by Kenneth Wiggins between December 2000 and January 2001, under licence reference 00E0912. The work was prompted by the presence of what appeared to be structural remains, a settlement cluster of five features visible or otherwise detectable at the site. Once excavated and assessed, however, those structures were found to be recent in date, placing them outside the scope of archaeological significance. The record was subsequently compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in February 2013, finding its place in the archive as a formally documented null result. Such records matter more than they might seem: a negative finding, properly logged, prevents future researchers from expending effort on the same ground and keeps the broader archaeological map of the region accurate.

Coolaboy is a rural townland in County Limerick, and there is no publicly accessible site to visit in any conventional sense. The excavation findings indicate that nothing of historical or material interest survives above or below ground at this location. For anyone working through the archaeology of the Limerick region, the licence record itself is the primary resource, held within the National Monuments Service database. Its value lies not in what was found but in the documentation of the process, a reminder that field archaeology involves as many closed doors as open ones, and that recording those closed doors is part of the discipline.
