Settlement cluster, Lackan, Co. Wicklow

On a south-west-facing slope in County Wicklow, the outlines of a vanished rural community are still legible in the ground.

Earth and stone banks divide the hillside into an irregular patchwork of small fields stretching roughly 1,400 metres from north-west to south-east and around 400 metres across, a scale that suggests a working agricultural landscape rather than the remains of a single farm. What makes the site quietly arresting is how complete the picture remains: not just field boundaries, but the ghost of domestic life preserved in low foundation walls and the faint corrugations of cultivation ridges running through the soil.

At the northern edge of the central area, the foundations of rectangular houses, each measuring roughly 5.8 metres by 5 metres, mark out what appear to have been two or three separate homesteads, each with associated outbuildings. A further two homesteads, similarly composed of house foundations and enclosed yards, lie about 50 metres to the north, suggesting a small cluster of neighbouring families rather than a single isolated holding. The cultivation ridges visible near the houses are the kind produced by lazy-bed farming, a technique of mounding soil into long parallel strips that was common across Ireland and particularly associated with potato cultivation. Together, the field systems, the house platforms, and the ridge patterns point to a community that worked this slope intensively, though the precise period of occupation is not recorded in surviving descriptions of the site.

The landscape here rewards patient looking. The earthworks are the sort that register best in low, raking light, particularly in the early morning or on overcast days when shadows settle into the hollows of old banks and ridges. Visitors approaching on foot across the slope will find that the scale of the field system only becomes apparent gradually, as boundary after boundary comes into view across the hillside.
