Look more carefully and the outlines emerge: the low, turf-smothered walls of four or five rectangular buildings, none of them much longer than four metres internally and less than two metres wide, accompanied by traces of small enclosures. The place is known locally as the Poneens, and the name itself is a quiet clue to what may once have happened here.

The name is thought to derive from the Irish word póna, meaning a cattle pound, an enclosure used to confine stray or impounded animals, which suggests that whatever community once occupied this spot was organised enough to manage livestock communally. The walls of the buildings survive to no more than half a metre in height, grass-grown and unassuming, and the settlement as a whole is provisionally dated to the eighteenth or nineteenth century. There is a vague local tradition that a village stood here, though the details have not survived with any clarity. Whether the site represents a community that dispersed gradually, or one that vanished more abruptly during the upheavals of that period in Kerry, is not recorded. The irregular field boundaries and the modest scale of the structures point to a small, subsistence-level settlement rather than anything formally planned.
