Settlement deserted – medieval, Derrydonnell More, Co. Galway

In the townland of Derrydonnell More, in County Galway, the ground holds the traces of a medieval settlement that was abandoned and never reoccupied.

Deserted medieval settlements are among the quieter presences in the Irish landscape: not dramatic ruins or defended strongholds, but the faint outlines of former field systems, house platforms, and pathways that only reveal themselves under low winter light or from the air. They are more common than most people realise, scattered across townlands whose names carry no obvious hint of former habitation.

The desertion of rural settlements across medieval Ireland happened for a variety of reasons, and rarely a single one. Population collapse following the Black Death in the fourteenth century emptied many small farming communities. Shifts in land management, particularly the consolidation of holdings under Gaelic lordships or later plantation arrangements, reorganised settlement patterns in ways that left earlier clusters of habitation simply redundant. In some cases, communities moved downslope toward better agricultural ground or a reliable water source; in others, the land reverted to rough grazing and the buildings dissolved back into the earth over generations. Derrydonnell More sits in east County Galway, a part of Connacht where both Gaelic and Anglo-Norman influences shaped landholding and settlement across the medieval centuries, and where the physical evidence of that layered past survives unevenly beneath pasture and bog.
