Settlement deserted – medieval, Tomona, Co. Tipperary

On the northern shore of Youghal Bay, where Lough Derg meets a stretch of marsh and rock outcrop on the Clare-Tipperary borderlands, there was once a medieval settlement substantial enough to be called a town.

Today, nothing marks it at ground level. No earthworks, no banks, no hollowed-out house platforms of the kind that typically betray a deserted settlement to a careful eye. The place known as Tomona has effectively withdrawn from the landscape entirely, leaving only its castle nearby as any kind of anchor to what once existed.

The documentary record offers a single, telling moment. In 1617, the castle, town, and lands of Tomonia were formally granted to William O'Meara under letters patent during the reign of James I. A grant of this kind, recording a castle alongside a town and its lands as a single transferable unit, suggests a settlement with some legal and economic weight, even if by that point its active life may already have been fading. The O'Meara family were a Tipperary sept with longstanding territorial interests in the region, and the grant places Tomona within the broader pattern of early seventeenth-century land redistribution that reshaped so much of Irish landholding in the decades following the Nine Years War. Whether the settlement was already abandoned by 1617, or whether it declined shortly afterwards, the landscape around Youghal Bay gives nothing away.
