The church that once stood here, dedicated to St James and most likely the medieval parish church of Rahoon, was already gone by 1938, leaving almost no visible trace of the building itself. What does survive, quietly and easily overlooked, is the shape of what came before.

The graveyard surrounding the lost church is largely nineteenth century in character, but two curving sections of its boundary wall, running to the north and south, may trace the arc of a much earlier ecclesiastical enclosure. These rounded enclosures, a form common across early medieval Ireland, typically defined the sacred precinct around a church and its associated buildings, and their circular or oval plan is often the longest-lasting evidence that a site of early Christian significance once existed in a given place. O'Flanagan, writing in 1927, noted the site, and the dedication to St James points to a medieval foundation of some standing in the old parish of Rahoon. A holy well lies to the northwest of the site, a further marker of the kind of layered, localised religious geography that gathered around early Irish church foundations over many centuries.

The site sits on low-lying ground, and the development that has grown up around it means the graveyard now exists as a kind of island within a suburban landscape. For anyone who knows what to look for, those curving wall sections offer a quietly legible record of a place that was considered sacred long before the nineteenth century dead were brought here, and long before Galway city expanded to surround it.
