Souterrain, An Gabhlán Beag, Co. Kerry

On an east-south-east facing slope above the Owenalondrig river at An Gabhlán Beag, there may be a tunnel that nobody has properly confirmed.

A souterrain, which is an underground stone-lined passageway typically associated with early medieval settlement, was recorded only briefly by a researcher named Curran, and its precise location within the surrounding earthworks remains uncertain. That ambiguity is part of what makes the site quietly interesting: it sits in a category somewhere between documented and merely rumoured.

The enclosure itself is a univallate rath, a single-banked circular earthwork of the kind constructed throughout Ireland during the early medieval period, generally between the sixth and twelfth centuries, as a defended farmstead. This one is roughly circular in plan and overlooks the Owenalondrig river from its sloping ground. Within its interior, the remains of three hut sites are still visible, suggesting it was a place of some domestic activity over a sustained period. J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, published as part of the Corca Dhuibhne survey, catalogued the site and noted the possible souterrain, though Curran's earlier mention of it offered little detail. Whether the underground passage survives intact, has collapsed, or was ever fully investigated is not clear from what has been recorded.
