In a field at Ballypherode in County Cork, a circular depression beside a field fence is the only visible sign that something lies, or once lay, beneath.
The depression is thought to indicate a collapsed souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber built during the early medieval period, typically used for storage, refuge, or ventilation within a farming settlement. What makes this particular feature quietly interesting is how little of it remains legible above ground, a hollow in the earth beside a boundary, easy to pass without a second glance.
