Souterrain, Clashygowan, Co. Donegal

Hidden beneath the fields of Clashygowan in County Donegal lies a remarkable underground passage known as a souterrain, first documented in 1956 by the National Museum of Ireland.

This stone-built tunnel stretches approximately 14 feet in length and stands 4 feet high, with walls about 3 feet apart. What makes this particular structure intriguing is its hourglass design; halfway along the passage, it narrows dramatically to just 2 feet 2 inches before opening up again, creating a defensive bottleneck that would have made unwanted entry extremely difficult.

The souterrain appears to be part of a larger underground complex, with archaeological reports suggesting the presence of additional chambers or similar structures nearby, though these remain unexplored. During its discovery, an inscribed stone slab was reportedly found within the passage, now held in a private collection. These mysterious underground structures, found throughout Ireland, likely date from the early medieval period and served multiple purposes; from food storage and refuge during raids to ritual or ceremonial uses.

The archaeological significance of the Clashygowan souterrain extends beyond its physical structure. It represents one of many such sites documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. This survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic Period through to the 17th century, providing invaluable insights into the county's rich archaeological heritage and the lives of those who once sought shelter or stored their goods in these ingenious underground passages.
