A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period in Ireland, and thought to have served as a place of refuge, cool storage, or concealment. They are found across the island in considerable numbers, yet many remain poorly documented, known more to the land they occupy than to the wider record.
