Settlement Sites
In the townland of Creggaballagh in County Mayo, beneath the ground, there is a souterrain: an artificial underground passage or chamber, typically built during the early medieval period in Ireland using dry-stone construction.
These structures were associated with ringforts and settlement sites, and served variously as places of refuge, cool storage for dairy produce, or concealed escape routes. The fact that one exists at Creggaballagh places the townland, however quietly, within a broader pattern of early medieval activity across the west of Ireland, where such features are scattered across the landscape, often with little to mark them above ground.
