Souterrain, Cullomane, Co. Cork

At Cullomane in West Cork, a roughly four-metre-wide depression in the ground and two inaccessible openings are all that announce the presence of something considerably older beneath the surface.

The site sits within what was once a ringfort, the circular earthwork enclosures that were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, though the fort itself has been levelled and is no longer legible as a structure. What remains visible hints at a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber cut from the earth, typically used in early medieval times for storage, shelter, or refuge. The twist here is that there may be two of them, and the surface evidence alone cannot tell them apart.

A six-inch Ordnance Survey map from 1944 marks two souterrains at this location, suggesting both were at least partially known or recorded by that point. The construction appears to be earth-cut rather than stone-lined, which places it among the simpler end of souterrain types found across Ireland, though such passages could still extend for considerable distances underground. The area of collapse visible today is a reminder that the ground above these features is not always stable, and that what looks like a modest hollow may conceal a more complex arrangement of tunnels or chambers below. Without excavation, the relationship between the two recorded souterrains remains unclear, and the site sits quietly ambiguous in a levelled landscape that gives little away.
