Souterrain, Derrygorman, Co. Kerry

At Derrygorman in County Kerry, a circular rath sits in an oddly ordinary position, level with the surrounding ground rather than raised on a commanding height as many of its kind tend to be.

A rath is an early medieval ringfort, typically defined by one or more earthen banks enclosing a domestic settlement, and this one was considered well-preserved enough to merit careful attention. What makes its situation stranger is that a roadway has since been cut straight through it from north to south, bisecting what was once an intact enclosure.

The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, a detailed study of the Corca Dhuibhne region. Within the rath, two possible hut-sites were identified, the kind of shallow circular or oval depressions that represent the footprints of long-vanished timber or wattle structures. A souterrain was also recorded, a souterrain being an underground stone-lined passage associated with early medieval settlements, likely used for cold storage or as a place of refuge. That passage, however, could not be located when the site was subsequently revisited. Whether it has collapsed, been obscured by vegetation, or was simply misidentified in the first place remains an open question. The rath itself survives, cut through and reduced, but still legible in the landscape of the Dingle Peninsula.
