Souterrain, Dooish, Co. Donegal

Hidden beneath the fields of Dooish in County Donegal lies a souterrain, one of Ireland's mysterious underground passages that dot the landscape across the country.

These subterranean structures, dating primarily from the early medieval period, were carved from earth and stone to create networks of tunnels and chambers beneath ancient settlements. While their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, theories range from storage spaces for food and valuables to places of refuge during raids, or perhaps serving ritualistic functions within Iron Age and early Christian communities.
