This kind of structure, known as a souterrain, is an underground gallery or series of rooms built from drystone walling, typically associated with early medieval settlement and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both. What makes this particular example quietly arresting is how much of it remains legible above ground: the drystone walling of the chamber walls is clearly visible, and the tunnel's path, entering through the northern bank before curving south-east, can still be traced.

The souterrain sits within a ringfort known in Irish as Lios na Moltachán, meaning the ringfort of the wethers, a wether being a castrated ram. The enclosure is described as a univallate cahir, meaning it is defined by a single surrounding bank or wall of stone rather than earthen ramparts, and its interior sits at a noticeably higher level than the land around it. The two underground chambers are separated by roughly 2.6 metres, and the western sector of the enclosure interior holds a further curiosity: a mound of stones measuring approximately 3.6 metres by 3 metres, with a small, shallow depression nearby. Whether these stone accumulations relate to the original occupation of the site, or to later disturbance or collapse, is not recorded. The site was documented in C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, which catalogued a remarkable density of prehistoric and early medieval monuments across the region.
