At a small burial ground on the Dingle Peninsula, the dead were not the only ones who left traces.

The site at Cill Eilthín, known in English as Killelton, preserves not just a calluragh, an unconsecrated or marginal burial ground often associated with unbaptised infants or those excluded from the churchyard proper, but a cluster of features that together suggest a much busier and more complex human occupation than a graveyard alone would imply.

Alongside the burial ground, archaeologists have recorded two hut sites, a souterrain, and a number of quern stones. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period in Ireland, and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both. Their presence alongside hut sites points to settled domestic activity, while the quern stones, used for hand-grinding grain, confirm that people were not merely passing through but living and working here. The site appears in Mary Agnes Hickson's 1889 writings and was later noted by Richard Hayward in 1976, placing it within a long tradition of antiquarian interest in the Corca Dhuibhne region. The Dingle Peninsula has one of the densest concentrations of early medieval and prehistoric remains anywhere in Ireland, and this particular cluster sits quietly within that broader landscape of layered occupation.

The convergence of a marginal burial ground with domestic structures and food-processing tools is what makes Killelton quietly odd. It raises questions about who lived here, in what relationship to the dead interred nearby, and over what span of time these different uses overlapped or succeeded one another. The site does not offer easy answers, but it rewards the kind of attention that looks past a single feature towards the accumulated texture of a place.
