A souterrain is an underground stone-built passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period and associated with ringforts, the circular enclosed settlements that dot the Irish countryside in their thousands. They served various purposes, from food storage to refuge. The one at Knockroe lies within the interior of a ringfort, which is the expected arrangement, a subterranean feature tucked inside a defended enclosure. What makes this particular example unusual is not its age or its construction, but its recent fate. According to local information, the souterrain was blocked up sometime in the last two decades before 2016, a deliberate act that has effectively erased it from view. No surface trace survives. The archaeology is still there, presumably intact beneath the soil, but access to it has been quietly closed off.
