Souterrain, Lackendarragh, Co. Cork

Beneath a field in Lackendarragh, in north County Cork, lies a souterrain that has effectively vanished.

A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, typically built during the early medieval period and associated with nearby ringforts, where they may have served as places of refuge, food storage, or escape. This one leaves no visible mark on the surface at all, making it one of those sites that exists more as a historical fact than as anything a person could point to.

What is curious is how it was recorded. The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842 labels the spot simply as "cave", which was a common shorthand used by early surveyors who encountered souterrains without fully understanding their archaeological character. The structure sits in the south-eastern quadrant of an associated ringfort, a circular enclosed settlement of the kind that was common across Ireland from roughly the sixth to the twelfth centuries. The ringfort itself is a separate recorded monument, and the souterrain would originally have formed part of the same domestic or defensive arrangement. By the time more systematic archaeological recording took place, any surface evidence of the souterrain's entrance or roofing stones had long since disappeared, whether through collapse, agricultural levelling, or deliberate removal.

With no visible surface trace remaining, there is little a visitor could hope to observe on the ground. The site's interest lies less in what can be seen and more in what the 1842 map entry quietly preserves, a moment when a surveyor noticed something, wrote down a single word, and moved on.
