Souterrain, Lehid, Co. Kerry

On the eastern slope of Knockatee Mountain in south-west Kerry, a shallow depression in a pasture field is just about all that remains visible of what local tradition insists was once an entrance to an underground passage.

The hollow is modest, roughly circular and not much more than a metre and a half across, accompanied by two low upright stones aligned on a north-west to south-east axis. It is easy to walk past without registering what it might represent, which is part of what makes it quietly interesting.

The site is classed as a possible souterrain, a type of structure found widely across early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of one or more stone-lined underground chambers or passages connected by narrow crawlways. Souterrains were built beneath or close to settled farmsteads and served various purposes, probably including food storage, refuge during raids, and the concealment of valuables. The particular souterrain at Lehid cannot be fully assessed because, as local knowledge has it, the entrance was closed up long ago, leaving only surface traces. Those traces, the depression and the paired orthostats, are enough to suggest that something deliberately constructed lies beneath, but without excavation the full extent and character of any underground structure remains unknown. The site sits to the north of the Bunaw-Drombohilly Lower road, set into sloping ground that would have offered natural drainage, a practical consideration for anyone constructing a chamber meant to stay dry.
