At the north-western inner edge of an earthen bank in Letter, County Kerry, a lintelled opening leads into a souterrain, a type of man-made underground passage built, typically in early medieval Ireland, for storage, refuge, or both.
The opening itself is visible, framed by its stone lintel, but the passage beyond is not accessible. What gives this particular feature an extra measure of interest is what the bank itself reveals: its outer face bulges outward at the precise point where the souterrain runs beneath it, a quiet physical trace of the underground structure pressing, over centuries, against the earth above.
