Souterrain, Lyre, Co. Cork

At Lyre in north Cork, there is nothing left to see, and that absence is itself the point.

Beneath what was once a ringfort, an early medieval enclosed settlement of the kind common across Ireland, there ran a souterrain, an underground stone-built passage or chamber typically used for storage or refuge. By the time anyone with archaeological training had a chance to properly examine it, the quarrying that consumed the site in the 1960s had already done most of its work.

What local accounts preserved, before the sand pit swallowed the rest, was a description that stands apart from the ordinary. The souterrain, people said, ran the entire length of the pit, and somewhere along its course sat a cone-shaped, beehive-style construction at its centre. That detail suggests something more elaborate than a simple creep passage roofed with flat lintels. In 1968, the archaeologists M.J. O'Kelly and E. Shee managed to inspect a surviving fragment, a section of stone-built entry passage still capped with lintels, which appeared to lead toward a chamber. Their account was published that same year. Shortly afterwards, the remainder was completely destroyed. The ringfort that had enclosed the souterrain in its southern half was gone too, leaving no surface trace of either structure.

The site sits in the category of places whose significance was recognised only at the moment of their disappearance. The beehive description is particularly tantalising, since corbelled, domed chambers of that kind are known from other Irish souterrains but are far from typical. Whether the local account was precise or embellished by the time it reached the record is now impossible to verify. The sand pit consumed the evidence along with the archaeology.
