Souterrain, Maulyclickeen, Co. Cork

Beneath a south-facing pasture in Maulyclickeen, Co. Cork, there are supposed to be underground stone chambers, and almost nobody would know it to look at the field.

There is no visible surface trace of what was once recorded here, only a local tradition that the passages extend eastward beneath a shed, and the quiet knowledge that something was removed and buried long ago.

A souterrain is a dry-stone underground passage or chamber, typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation for nearby structures. The example at Maulyclickeen was noted in 1934 by a researcher named Bowman, who recorded two souterrains on land then belonging to a Mr O'Gorman. By the time of that record, the stones had already been taken away and the holes filled in. Whether this was done for practical reasons, to prevent livestock from falling through, or simply to reclaim usable building material, as happened with countless such structures across the country, is not noted. A second souterrain was recorded nearby on the same land. Local memory of underground chambers extending to the east suggests the original structure may have been more extensive than the record captures.

There is nothing to see at Maulyclickeen today, and that is, in its own way, the point. The site sits in ordinary grazing land, its archaeology absorbed back into the slope. What remains is the gap between what was once recorded and what now exists, along with a thread of oral tradition that outlasted the stonework itself.
