The depression runs roughly east to west and measures about 3.3 metres in length, and to an untrained eye it might look like nothing more than a hollow left by livestock or subsidence. What it actually marks is a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber built during the early medieval period, typically used for storage, refuge, or both, and constructed with enough care that its roof stones have held their position for centuries.

The souterrain sits within the western half of a ringfort, the circular earthwork enclosure that was the standard unit of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, roughly between the sixth and twelfth centuries. Ringforts varied considerably in scale and complexity, but the pairing of a souterrain with a ringfort is well documented across the country; the underground structure was usually accessed from within the enclosure and served the household above it. Here, the ringfort it belongs to is a recorded monument in its own right. The souterrain itself is classed as inaccessible, meaning the passage below has not been entered or examined in any systematic way, and what can be observed is limited to that exposed lintel sitting at the surface of the depression.
