Settlement Sites
At Milleens in south-west Kerry, a site is recorded on the basis of local memory rather than anything a visitor could see or touch.
The tradition holds that there was once an opening to a souterrain here, a type of underground stone-lined passage or chamber commonly associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, often used for storage or as a place of refuge. Nothing of it remains visible above ground.
