This ancient defensive structure consists of five concentric earthen banks with four ditches between them, creating a formidable series of barriers spanning approximately 280 feet in diameter. The fort's strategic position on elevated ground would have provided its inhabitants with commanding views of the surrounding countryside whilst offering significant defensive advantages.

The most intriguing feature of this site is a souterrain, or underground passage, accessible through an opening on the southwestern side just inside the innermost bank. Built using dry stone masonry walls and roofed with substantial stone slabs measuring roughly 12 by 8 inches, this subterranean structure represents the kind of sophisticated engineering common to Irish ringforts. The passage appears to curve clockwise for at least ten feet, though its full extent remains unknown as earth and mud have largely filled the tunnel over the centuries.

First documented in detail in 1946, the souterrain's current state suggests significant deterioration; it's unclear whether the visible opening represents the original entrance or resulted from a roof collapse. A telling depression in the rampart about 15 feet from the current opening hints at further collapse along the souterrain's route, suggesting the underground passage may have originally extended much further beneath the fort's defences. These souterrains typically served multiple purposes in ancient Irish society, from storage of valuable goods and food supplies to providing refuge during raids, making them essential features of many defensive settlements.
