It is easy to walk past without registering what it is: a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber constructed during the early medieval period, typically used for storage or as a place of refuge. The entrance here, framed by a lintel stone in the western face of the bank, leads into a passage that runs roughly north-east, though the interior has largely silted and collapsed over the centuries, leaving the structure more suggested than accessible.
