Standing stone, Baile An Bhúlaeraigh Theas, Co. Kerry

Not every archaeological site is a thing you can visit.

Some exist only as absences, places where something once stood and is now simply gone, their presence preserved only in old maps and survey records. In the upper reaches of the lower Garfinny valley on the Dingle Peninsula, a standing stone, recorded on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map under the Irish term "gallaun", a single upright stone of prehistoric origin, has long since disappeared from the level pastureland where it once stood.

The stone's existence is known largely through J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region, a thorough cataloguing of the Dingle Peninsula's remarkable density of ancient monuments. By the time that survey was compiled, the gallaun was already gone. What remains is essentially a locational note: level pastureland, the lower Garfinny valley, a quiet agricultural landscape that would have looked quite different when the stone was first erected, likely in the Bronze Age, when such markers served purposes that are still debated, whether territorial, ritual, or funerary. The Dingle Peninsula has an unusually high concentration of prehistoric monuments, and a standing stone in this valley would have been one modest but deliberate feature in a much wider pattern of ancient land use.
