Standing stone, Ballyhork, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Ballyhork on County Donegal's Fanad peninsula, there once stood mysterious standing stones that have since vanished from the landscape.

The 1835 Ordnance Survey Memoir recorded what was locally known as a 'Giant's Grave', describing an upright stone roughly 1.05 metres long and 1.5 metres high, alongside a fallen stone of similar dimensions. The original OS six-inch map from 1835 marked the site as 'Standing Stones', whilst later editions from 1846-48 and 1905 referred to it simply as 'Standing Stone', suggesting that one of the pair may have disappeared or fallen during that period.

Despite its evocative name, archaeological evidence suggests this wasn't actually a megalithic tomb at all, but rather a pair of standing stones whose original purpose remains unclear. The stones were located at grid reference C 172 401, though by 1983, no trace of them survived above ground. Their presence lingered only in historical records and the collective memory of the area, with the site still designated as a protected archaeological constraint (DG017-007).

In 2008, archaeologist Richard Crumlish conducted pre-development testing at the site before construction of a cattle shed. His team excavated two trenches, each over 13 metres long, hoping to uncover remnants of the lost monument. The dig revealed only modern debris; concrete, rubble wall foundations from recently demolished outhouses, and layers of topsoil above natural subsoil and bedrock, with no archaeological finds. The stones, which would have stood on a prominent height less than 20 metres west of the development area, had completely disappeared, leaving behind only their mark on old maps and the enduring mystery of their origin and fate.
