Standing stone, Bishop'S Island, Co. Cork

Stone Monuments
On a south-west-facing pasture slope on Bishop's Island in County Cork, a single rectangular standing stone rises nearly two metres out of the ground, leaning just slightly to the east as though caught mid-thought.
Standing stones of this kind are among the most enigmatic features of the Irish landscape, raised during prehistory for purposes that remain genuinely unclear; theories range from territorial markers to ritual focal points, though none has settled the matter. What makes this one quietly compelling is its combination of modest scale and precise form, a slab measuring 1.05 metres across and only 0.3 metres thick, its long axis oriented north-east to south-west in a way that may or may not have been deliberate.
