Standing stone, Boardee, Co. Cork

In the townland of Boardee in County Cork, a standing stone is no longer standing.

That simple fact is what makes it worth noting. These large upright stones, erected across Ireland during the Bronze Age as boundary markers, ritual focal points, or commemorations of the dead, have an extraordinary survival rate given their age. Most have outlasted the civilisations that raised them, the languages spoken around them, and any memory of their original purpose. This one did not make it through the twentieth century intact.
