Standing stone, Cappaghavuckee, Co. Cork

On the lower slopes of the Slieve Miskish Mountains in west Cork, a rectangular standing stone sits quietly facing Bantry Bay.

It is not especially tall, just under a metre in height, and its dimensions are modest enough, roughly seventy centimetres by thirty-five. What makes it worth pausing over is its deliberate alignment along an east-west axis, a characteristic shared by many prehistoric standing stones across Ireland and suggesting that whoever erected it was paying attention to the movement of the sun, or to something else entirely that we can no longer read with confidence.

The stone sits within a landscape that was clearly of some significance to the people who shaped it. Around 150 metres to the west-southwest lies a boulder burial, a form of prehistoric funerary monument found almost exclusively in the south-west of Ireland, in which a large capstone rests directly on the ground or on small supporting stones, covering a burial beneath. The proximity of the standing stone to this burial feature hints at a ceremonial or commemorative landscape, where different monument types were placed in deliberate relation to one another rather than scattered at random. The site appears in O'Brien's 1970 survey of the area and was later included in the published Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
