Standing stone, Carrowreagh or Craignacally, Co. Donegal

On the northern slopes of Craigawannia, where pasture land meets the sand dunes of Pollan Bay, stands a solitary stone monument that has watched over this corner of County Donegal for millennia.

The standing stone at Carrowreagh Or Craignacally rises 1.27 metres from the ground, its base measuring 1.39 metres across, and is oriented along a north-northeast to south-southwest axis. This prominent position, overlooking the bay where land transitions to sea, suggests the stone's placement was deliberate and meaningful to those who erected it.

Standing stones like this one are amongst Ireland's most enigmatic prehistoric monuments, typically dating from the Bronze Age period between 2500 and 500 BCE. While their exact purpose remains a mystery, archaeologists have proposed various theories; some may have served as territorial markers, others as commemorative monuments for important individuals, and some possibly held astronomical significance, marking celestial events or seasonal changes. The orientation of this particular stone, running roughly north to south, might have held ritual or practical importance for the ancient communities who inhabited this coastal landscape.

The stone's survival through thousands of years speaks to both its robust construction and the respect it has commanded through generations. Today, it remains an evocative reminder of Donegal's deep prehistory, standing in its original location whilst the world around it has transformed beyond recognition. Its presence in the landscape continues to intrigue visitors and locals alike, offering a tangible connection to the people who first shaped this land long before written history began.
