Standing stone, Castlemungret, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly fitting about a standing stone that cannot be found.

These solitary upright megaliths, raised across Ireland during the Bronze Age and possibly earlier, were presumably meant to be seen, to mark something, to mean something. Yet the one recorded at Castlemungret, on the southern fringes of County Limerick, has managed to slip the record entirely. It exists as an entry, a map reference, a category, but not, as far as any recent survey has been able to confirm, as a locatable object in a field.

The notes associated with the site place it in gently undulating pasture immediately south of a small road, with marsh and more rough ground extending further southward, and a wooded area sitting across the road to the north. Castlemungret itself is a townland with some historical weight, lying close to the ecclesiastical site of Mungret, one of the early medieval monasteries that once gave this part of Limerick its religious character. Whether the standing stone has any connection to that longer story is impossible to say. What the record states plainly is that when surveyors went to look, the site could not be located. It may have been removed, buried, toppled into the marsh, or simply misidentified in an earlier survey. All of these fates have befallen standing stones elsewhere in Ireland.

For anyone curious enough to go looking, the terrain itself offers some guidance. The area is working agricultural land, so access would depend on landowner permission. The ground to the south is described as undulating pasture and marsh, which in practical terms means uneven footing and wet conditions for much of the year; summer visits would make the going considerably easier. If the stone does still exist somewhere in the grass or scrub, it would likely be a single unshaped or roughly shaped upright, the kind easily mistaken at a distance for a fence post or a lump of field clearance. The honest likelihood, though, is that there is nothing left to find, and the most the site can offer now is the particular atmosphere of looking for something that may no longer be there.
