Standing stone, Cullaun, Co. Tipperary

One particular stone recorded on the undulating pasture of Timoney Park in County Tipperary has left no trace above ground at all.

Catalogued as stone 6E on a survey map from the 1930s, it belongs to a wider scatter of standing stones spread across the adjoining townlands of Timoney Hills and Cullaun, and its disappearance is perhaps less surprising once you understand just how many of its companions have also gone.

When the Inspector of National Monuments surveyed the area between 1934 and 1936, he counted 221 stones still standing or partially upright, of which 173 were in Timoney Hills and 48 in Cullaun. His description was frank about the losses already sustained: a number had been eliminated, though he considered the remaining group "a most remarkable" one. The stones, all of red sandstone or conglomerate, stood between roughly 0.9 and 1.8 metres above ground. He noted that they appeared to follow no particular arrangement or system, with one exception: a recognisable stone circle in Cullaun. A later map published in the Archaeological Survey of Ikerrin, compiled by Stout in 1984, raised the original count to 245 stones and recorded that 70 had been removed, along with five cairns, all now also gone. The sheer scale of the group makes it one of the more unusual concentrations of standing stones in Ireland, though what purpose or period it represents remains genuinely unclear. The fact that the stones sit within the landscaped parkland of the Parker-Hutchinson estate at Timoney Park has also led some to question whether all of them are genuinely ancient, or whether the estate's ornamental history complicates the picture.
