A granite boulder rises about two and a half metres from the ground in a field near Derryhiveny in County Galway, irregular in shape and squat in profile, the kind of prehistoric standing stone that tends to prompt more questions than it answers.
What makes this particular example quietly unsettling is not what it is, but where it is not. The stone no longer occupies its original position.
