Standing stone, Drumsheen, Co. Mayo

Most standing stones are taller than they are wide, which is rather the point of the name.

The one at Drumsheen, in County Mayo, breaks that convention quietly but completely. At one and a half metres tall and two metres across, it is more of a broad upright slab than a finger of stone pointing skyward, and its proportions give it an oddly low, grounded presence on the narrow spine of a north-south ridge. It leans slightly to the east, thickest at mid-height and tapering towards both top and base, which gives it something of a lens-like profile when seen from the side.

The stone sits amid ordinary pasture with wide views in every direction over a landscape of rolling fields and bog. To the east, a stream runs roughly a hundred metres away, beyond which the ground opens into large expanses of bog, with the Ox Mountains marking the far horizon. That combination of ridge-top position and unobstructed sightlines is typical of prehistoric standing stones across Ireland, many of which seem to have been placed with a deliberate awareness of the surrounding terrain, though whether for ritual, territorial, or navigational reasons remains genuinely uncertain. What is also notable here is that the stone goes unrecorded on the Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1837 to 1838, one of the most thorough early surveys of the Irish landscape, only appearing as a marked feature on the 1922 edition. That gap does not necessarily mean the stone was erected in the intervening period; stones of this kind were sometimes simply missed, or considered unremarkable enough to omit. Adding another layer of interest, a mound sits just 1.4 metres to the west of the stone, suggesting this small ridge-top may have held more significance in the past than its current setting in average farmland would suggest.
