Standing stone, Inse Fhearann Na Gcléireach, Co. Kerry

On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a standing stone sits in a level field between the townlands of Mullaghbeg and Eagles Hill, unmarked on Ordnance Survey maps.

That last detail is quietly telling. Prehistoric standing stones, single upright slabs erected in the Bronze Age or earlier for purposes that remain genuinely uncertain, were common enough across Ireland that many ended up on official cartography. This one did not, which means it has existed largely outside the official record, known to local farmers and anyone who happened to cross the field.

The stone itself is rectangular at its base and regular in its form, which is to say it has not dramatically tilted or twisted over the centuries. It stands 1.45 metres high and measures 0.75 metres by 0.42 metres at the base, oriented on a northeast to southwest axis. That orientation is worth noting: a number of Irish standing stones are aligned in ways that may relate to solar or lunar events, though whether this one was deliberately positioned with the landscape or the sky in mind is not recorded. What gives the stone a particular character is the presence of small veins of quartz running through it. Quartz appears repeatedly in prehistoric Irish ritual contexts, scattered at passage tomb entrances and incorporated into monuments at sites like Newgrange, and its recurrence suggests the material carried some significance to the people who shaped and placed these structures. Whether that association applies here, or whether the quartz is incidental to the geology, is an open question.
