Standing stone, Killaclohane, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Killaclohane in County Kerry, a standing stone has been holding its position in the landscape for a very long time.

Standing stones, raised during the Bronze Age in most cases, were set upright by communities whose precise intentions remain unclear to us; boundary markers, ceremonial focal points, and memorials for the dead have all been proposed, and the honest answer is that different stones probably served different purposes. Kerry has a remarkable concentration of them, scattered across its peninsulas and uplands, and this one at Killaclohane is among those that have attracted formal archaeological attention, even if relatively little about it has been placed on public record.
