Standing stone, Kilnagarns, Co. Leitrim

On the east-facing slope of a Leitrim drumlin, a sandstone slab that may once have swung a farm gate is also, technically, a prehistoric standing stone.

The two identities sit awkwardly together. At 1.35 metres tall and only 0.25 metres wide, the upright is modest by the standards of the tradition, and its western edge has been damaged, most likely through the practical indignities of agricultural reuse. It has been absorbed into a field bank, oriented roughly east-northeast to west-southwest, which is how ancient monuments often survive in working farmland: not preserved in amber but pressed into service.

What makes its situation quietly interesting is the proximity of a court tomb roughly 35 metres to the west. Court tombs are among the earliest megalithic monuments in Ireland, communal stone-built burial chambers constructed by Neolithic farming communities, typically with a roofless forecourt at one end where ritual activity is thought to have taken place. Whether the standing stone was originally connected to that monument, served a separate purpose, or arrived on the slope in a different era altogether is not recorded. What Michael J. Moore's Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim, published in 2003, does note is simply the coincidence of their nearness. A sandstone pillar and a Neolithic tomb, sharing the same drumlin, one long since folded into the field system, the other presumably still visible to the west.
