Standing stone, Leahys, Co. Limerick

A standing stone on a golf course is already an unusual combination, but what makes this particular example at Leahys in County Limerick genuinely curious is a question of authenticity, or rather, of displacement.

The stone itself is real enough, an irregularly shaped upright roughly 1.35 metres tall, tapering to a pointed top and measuring 0.44 metres by 0.23 metres at its base. Whether it has always occupied this precise spot is another matter entirely.

The stone sits atop a low east-west ridge within the grounds of a golf course, a setting that introduces a layer of interpretive difficulty. Standing stones, which are single upright stones set into the ground, typically date from the Bronze Age or earlier and were positioned with considerable deliberation, sometimes to mark boundaries, sometimes in relation to burial sites or astronomical alignments. Yet as Denis Power noted when compiling the record in 2011, there is a real possibility that the stone was moved to its current position during the landscaping works that accompanied the development of the golf course. That single caveat changes the nature of the monument considerably. It may be an ancient stone in its original context, or it may be an ancient stone that was simply tidied to one side when the fairways were laid out.

Visitors should be aware that access to the stone requires entering the golf course grounds, so it is worth making enquiries beforehand to avoid wandering onto an active course. The stone stands on the ridge line, which should make it relatively straightforward to locate once you are in the general area. Given its modest height, it will not announce itself from a distance, and the surrounding course landscape offers little in the way of contextual clues about what might once have stood nearby. What you are looking at, in the end, is a pointed, irregular piece of stone whose original meaning and precise history remain genuinely open questions.
