Standing stone, Liafin, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Liafin near Buncrana, a solitary standing stone rises from rough pasture overlooking the waters of Lough Swilly.

Measuring roughly 2 metres high and just under a metre wide, this prehistoric monument stands aligned northeast to southwest, a silent sentinel that has watched over the Donegal landscape for millennia. Like many of Ireland's standing stones, its original purpose remains enigmatic; it may have served as a territorial marker, held ritual significance, or formed part of an ancient astronomical alignment.

The stone attracted archaeological attention in 2005 when plans for a new dwelling threatened to encroach on its surroundings. Under excavation licence 05E0608, archaeologist Richard Crumlish conducted pre-development testing within the monument's constraint area, with the proposed house sitting 50 metres away and a new access road coming within 14 metres of the ancient stone. Three test trenches were excavated across the development site, cutting through areas designated for the dwelling, septic tank, and driveway.

The excavations revealed little beyond the natural subsoils of sandy clay and silty loam that characterise this part of Donegal. Apart from two modern land drains, a backfilled test pit, and a single sherd of contemporary pottery found in the topsoil, no archaeological materials or features came to light. Whilst the testing found nothing of archaeological significance in the immediate vicinity, the standing stone itself remains protected, continuing its long vigil over Lough Swilly as it has done since prehistoric times.
