Standing stone, Na Ráithíneacha, Co. Kerry

Some sites are notable for what they no longer are.

At Na Ráithíneacha in County Kerry, the Ordnance Survey maps mark a gallaun, the Irish term for a standing stone, a single upright megalith of the kind found scattered across the Dingle Peninsula in considerable numbers. This one, however, has not stood for decades. It fell roughly forty years before a 1979 reference recorded its absence, which places the collapse somewhere around the late 1930s or early 1940s, and today nothing visible remains above ground.

When it was still upright, the stone was a substantial presence. A description by Curran records it as eight feet tall and three feet thick, dimensions that would have made it a commanding marker in the landscape. Galláin of this scale were erected in prehistory, though their precise purpose remains debated; they may have served as territorial boundaries, ritual focal points, or waymarkers along ancient routes. The Dingle Peninsula is unusually dense with such monuments, and this particular stone was catalogued as part of the Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey published in 1986, which documented the extraordinary concentration of prehistoric and early medieval remains across the area around Ballyferriter.

There is little to see at the site itself now, the stone having vanished into the ground or been removed entirely. Its interest lies less in what a visitor might find than in what the maps still faithfully record, a monument that persists as a cartographic ghost long after the physical object ceased to exist.
