Standing stone - pair, Cartron, Co. Mayo

Stone Monuments
Two standing stones placed in deliberate proximity to one another are among the quieter puzzles of the Irish landscape.
Pairs like those at Cartron in County Mayo are distinct from the more familiar solitary standing stone, and that distinction matters. Where a single stone might mark a grave, a boundary, or simply a cleared field, a pair implies relationship, alignment, or ceremony. The gap between them, and the axis they define, was almost certainly intentional, even if the intention is now beyond recovery.
